Diamond vs. Square Knurling: What the Difference Actually Means for Your Training

Diamond knurl vs. square knurl is one of those barbell specs lifters often overlook until their hands are shredded after a heavy session — or until a bar feels strangely slick during a max attempt. Knurling is the raised, cross-hatched texture cut into the shaft that gives you grip, and the pattern it's cut in changes how a bar feels in your hands far more than most people expect before they've felt both side by side.

There are two patterns to know here: diamond knurling and square knurling. Neither is objectively "better" — they trade off bite and comfort differently, and which one belongs in your hands depends on what you're training.

What Diamond Knurling Does

Diamond knurling is the standard, aggressive cross-hatch pattern cut at roughly 1.2mm depth with a 120mm center-knurl width, and it's what runs across most of our Power Bar range. Two sets of parallel grooves cross each other to form sharp, raised diamond points. Those points bite into your palm and concentrate grip pressure on a small number of contact points, which is exactly what you want when you're chasing a max-effort squat, bench, or deadlift single: maximum friction, minimum slip, no second-guessing your grip under a heavy bar.

The center knurl on a diamond-pattern power bar also matters for squats specifically — it's what keeps the bar from sliding across your back under load, since a power bar (unlike a deadlift bar) carries knurling all the way through the middle of the shaft.

What Square Knurling Does

Square knurling — sometimes called KP1.0 or hatch knurling — swaps the sharp diamond points for a finer, shallower grid, typically cut around 0.3–0.4mm deep with a wider 140mm center-knurl width. Instead of two crossing diagonal grooves forming pointed peaks, a square knurl cuts a straight grid of small, flat-topped ridges.

That geometry spreads grip pressure across more of your palm instead of concentrating it on a handful of sharp points. In practice, that means a bar that bites less into your skin over high-rep sets and longer training blocks, while still holding securely enough for heavy singles — a genuinely useful trade for anyone doing serious training volume rather than a single competition attempt. It's also still IPF-legal, so you're not giving up meet eligibility to get a hand-friendlier training bar. And it is more "sticky" without being just sharp.

How to Tell the Difference by Feel

If you're standing in front of a bar and can't tell which knurl it has, run your thumb lightly across the shaft. A diamond knurl feels like a series of distinct, sharp raised points — you can feel each one individually, and it bites almost immediately. A square knurl feels flatter and more like a fine grid; the ridges are still raised, but there's no sharp peak digging into your skin. Visually, diamond knurling shows as a crosshatch of X-shaped points, while square knurling shows as a straight, even grid.

The Trade-Off

An aggressive diamond knurl is the right call when grip security matters more than comfort — a single max-effort lift where you cannot afford any slip. Run high volume on that same aggressive pattern, though, and your hands will tell you about it long before your training block is over: torn calluses, raw palms, grip fatigue that has nothing to do with the weight on the bar. A square knurl solves that specific problem without sacrificing enough grip to matter for most training work — the trade-off only shows up at the very top end of maximal effort, where some lifters still prefer the more aggressive bite of diamond knurling.

If most of your training is submaximal volume work, a square knurl bar will be kinder to your hands. If you're peaking for a meet or chasing max singles regularly, the sharper bite of a diamond knurl bar earns its keep.

Which One Do You Need?

If your training is built around volume — multiple sets, multiple sessions a week, hands that need to survive the whole training block — the square-knurl bar is worth the switch. If you're peaking for a meet or your training is centered on max-effort singles, the standard diamond knurl is the more secure choice.
