The Sand Atlas Stone is a safer, more accessible alternative to a traditional atlas stone - and a more demanding training tool than most people expect. Built from 100% 1050D Cordura nylon with a double-layer construction, it replicates the loading position, grip challenge, and carry mechanics of a stone without requiring a dedicated outdoor setup or risking equipment damage from drops.

Round, compact, and awkward to hold by design - exactly as it should be.

Built for Repeated Heavy Use

  • Double-layer construction - outer shell and inner liner, both in the same heavy-duty 1050D Cordura material. The liner contains the filler; the shell absorbs the external punishment.
  • Triple-stitched reinforced seams - the highest-stress points in any drop or load are the seams. Three passes of stitching at every seam means they hold where single or double stitching fails.
  • Heavy-duty filler flap - wide opening for fast loading, sealed securely once filled.
  • Industrial-grade Velcro closure - locks the filler flap under load.
  • YKK zipper security system - the benchmark for zipper reliability in textile equipment worldwide.
  • Designed to withstand repeated drops - the round shape and flexible construction absorbs impact rather than concentrating it. This is a bag that can be trained with daily.

Note: Like all textile training equipment, wear will occur with long-term heavy use. To maximise lifespan, avoid training on sharp edges or abrasive surfaces.

The Sand Atlas Stone is built for the training demands of strongman, functional fitness, and general conditioning where an atlas stone would be used — but with the flexibility of adjustable weight and solo-friendly loading.

Primary training uses

  • Atlas stone loading to platform (replicates the competition movement without the stone)
  • Over-yoke carries
  • Bear hug carries and front carries
  • Shouldering drills
  • Grip and posterior chain development
  • Functional conditioning circuits

Filling and Weight

The wide filler flap opens fully for fast, clean loading. Fill it, seal it, train.

Recommended filler: Kiln-dried sand — accurate weight, maximum density, stable once settled.

Alternative fillers:

  • Rubber crumb → Larger bag for the weight, lighter overall
  • Lead or metal shot → Extremely dense — maximum weight in minimum diameter

Final weight may vary slightly depending on filling material and packing density.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What filler should I use?

Kiln-dried sand is the standard recommendation — it's dense, inexpensive, and doesn't shift excessively once the bag is packed. Avoid moist or garden sand, which can clump, add unpredictable weight, and degrade the inner liner over time.

2. Can I adjust the weight after filling?

Yes. The filler flap and closure system are designed for repeated opening and refilling. You can add or remove filler to adjust the weight as your training progresses.

3. Is this suitable for drops from height?

The bag is designed to withstand repeated drops as part of normal training — atlas stone loading and platform work inherently involves dropping the bag. The double-layer construction and triple-stitched seams handle this. Dropping from extreme heights onto sharp surfaces or edges will eventually cause wear — this applies to any textile equipment.

4. How does this compare to a real atlas stone?

The training demand is similar — the round shape, the lack of handles, and the awkward grip challenge replicate the core difficulty of a stone. The key differences are: the sand stone is adjustable in weight, far lighter to move between stations, can be used indoors, and can be trained solo without risk of damaging flooring. For competition athletes, training on both is ideal. For athletes training alone or without a dedicated platform, the sand stone covers the movement pattern fully.

5. What weights are available?

20kg, 40kg, 60kg, 80kg, 100kg, 120kg, and 140kg.
