Original Texas Fat Axle Power Bar – 50mm Axle

The axle bar, done properly.

Product Overview

Most axle bars on the market are exactly what they look like: a thick steel pipe with fixed sleeves and no knurling worth mentioning. They test your grip, but not in a useful way - they test whether you can hold onto a smooth, spinning piece of tube long enough to do something meaningful with it.

The Texas Fat Axle Power Bar is built on an entirely different premise. Handbuilt by Buddy Capps in Texas, it takes the 50mm thick-grip concept and applies the same standards that have made Texas Power Bars the reference point for powerlifting barbells since 1980: aggressive full-length knurling, fully rotating sleeves, and high-tensile steel throughout. The result is an axle bar that actually performs like a barbell.

The Red Cerakote finish adds high corrosion resistance while keeping the knurl feel sharp, making it a practical choice for both heavy use training environments and home gyms.

The Case for a Thick Grip Bar

Training with a 50mm diameter shaft changes the mechanics of almost every upper body movement. The wider grip forces the forearm flexors, wrist stabilisers, and hand musculature to work harder — not just to hold on, but to stabilise the load through the full range of motion. This increased neural demand translates directly to stronger hands, a tighter grip, and more stable mechanics on your standard barbell.

Used strategically alongside a standard bar, a fat axle is one of the most effective tools for building the kind of grip strength that shows up when it matters: heavy deadlifts, competition pulls, and any movement where the bar is the limiting factor before the muscles are.

The 50mm shaft is also well-suited to athletes with larger hands who find standard 28–29mm bars feel cramped, or lifters who have been told their grip is the weak link in their performance.

What Makes This Different From a Standard Axle Bar

The most common complaint about axle bars is straightforward: fixed sleeves. When the sleeves cannot rotate, the bar transmits torque directly into your wrists on pressing movements, making bench press, overhead press, and dynamic movements uncomfortable — and potentially damaging over time. The Texas Fat Axle solves this with fully rotating sleeves, the same way a quality standard barbell does. This opens up the full range of exercises without compromise.

The second issue with most axle bars is the lack of knurling. A thick, smooth shaft is hard to grip — not because it is training your grip, but because there is simply nothing to hold onto. The Texas Fat Axle runs aggressive knurling end-to-end with no smooth centre section. That means a locked-in, secure grip across the full length of the bar, regardless of where you hold it.

Key Features

  • 50mm thick shaft — increases forearm, wrist stabiliser, and hand muscle recruitment
  • Fully rotating sleeves — reduces wrist torque, compatible with all lifting styles
  • Full-length aggressive knurling — no smooth centre, secure grip from end to end
  • Red Cerakote finish — high corrosion resistance, sharp knurl feel
  • ~219cm total length — rackable on standard power racks
  • ~39cm loadable sleeve length for heavy training loads
  • ~25kg total weight
  • ~1310 MPa high-tensile steel
  • Handbuilt by Buddy Capps in Texas since 1980

Who This Bar Is For

  • Powerlifters and strength athletes looking to develop grip strength and forearm stability
  • Strongman athletes training for events involving thick implements
  • Lifters whose grip is a limiting factor on deadlifts, rows, or pressing movements
  • Athletes with larger hands who want more bar contact on pulls and presses
  • Anyone looking to add variety and a higher skill demand to upper body training
  • Commercial gyms and specialist strength facilities wanting a quality thick-grip option

Exercises and Training Applications

The Texas Fat Axle works across a wide range of movements:

  • Deadlifts — the most direct grip challenge; the 50mm shaft forces active engagement from the first rep
  • Bench press — rotating sleeves allow natural wrist alignment throughout the press
  • Overhead press — grip and shoulder stability training in one
  • Bent-over rows — increased forearm recruitment and back engagement
  • Floor press — effective for raw strength work without a rack
  • Farmers carry variations — when loaded onto a trap bar or used as a standalone implement

It is also commonly used in Strongman training, where thick implements are a regular part of competition preparation.

Note: While the rotating sleeves make dynamic movements possible, this bar is primarily designed for strength training. For dedicated Olympic weightlifting, a dedicated Olympic barbell remains the better choice.

FAQ

What is the benefit of a 50mm thick-grip bar?
A thicker shaft recruits more muscles in the hand, forearm, and wrist to stabilise the load. This increases the neural demand of every movement, builds grip strength faster than a standard bar, and improves stability and control when you return to a 28–29mm bar.

Why do the rotating sleeves matter on an axle bar?
Most axle bars have fixed sleeves, which means the bar does not spin during pressing movements. This transmits torque directly into the wrists, making bench press, overhead press, and dynamic movements uncomfortable. Fully rotating sleeves resolve this and make the bar suitable for the full range of barbell movements.

Does the full knurling make it harder to use?
The aggressive end-to-end knurling gives you a much more secure grip than a smooth axle bar — it does not make the lift harder, it makes your grip more reliable. Most lifters find the knurling preferable, especially on heavy deadlifts and rows where a smooth bar would require chalk and still feel insecure.

Can I use this bar with a standard power rack?
Yes. At ~219cm the bar is rackable on standard power racks. Confirm your rack's inner width before purchase if you are unsure.

Is the Red Cerakote durable?
Yes. Cerakote is a polymer-ceramic coating with excellent corrosion resistance. It holds up well under regular heavy use and keeps the knurl feel intact over time. Wipe down after use to maintain condition.
